International Services

We provide the following services as an agent of Travelex.

This information is general in nature. More specific information can be found at Travelex’s website www.holidaymoney.com.au

Foreign Currency

What’s one of the first things we need to have when we step into a foreign country? Local Cash! Simple things like buying a coffee, bottle of water or paying a taxi become difficult if we do not have the local currency to purchase them with.

Why not order your foreign currency ahead of time before leaving Australia and take the hassle out of queues at the airport. We have the ability to offer you a large range of currencies and denominations. US Dollars, British Pounds, Euro and New Zealand Dollars can be made available for pick up in normally less than one week.

Don’t forget, we also repurchase your unused foreign currency when you return from your overseas trip.

Security Hints & Tips

  • For security reasons, Travelex suggests you do not carry around large amounts of local cash.
  • To minimise loss or theft Travelex recommends carrying small amounts of foreign cash only.
  • As an alternative to cash, the Cash Passport (see further details below) is a safe and convenient way to carry your holiday money.

How to go order?

  • Simply pop into your local branch and place your order with one of our friendly MSO’s.

Telegraphic Transfers

Do you want to buy an overseas property but are unsure as to how you can make the payment from here? Maybe you need to send wages or salaries to employees working abroad? Or do you simply want to send funds to a family member or friend living overseas.

Telegraphic transfers are an easy way to send large amounts of money overseas quickly. A normal transfer takes approximately 72 hours. This enables you to respond swiftly to a special deal or financial agreement efficiently and with confidence.

How do they work?

In simple terms, a telegraphic transfer transmits funds electronically to an overseas bank account in a specified currency. Funds are deposited directly into the Payee’s bank account where they can be easily accessed by the Payee.

Why choose a Telegraphic transfer?

  • You get certainty about when the payment was received.
  • Payments can be made between local and overseas organisations or people.
  • You can send a payment in most major currencies.
  • A telegraphic transfer is an electronic instruction to the nominated Payee’s bank. This means it is more secure than physical payment means such as cheques or drafts (provided you have used the correct account details).
  • You can include brief messages as part of the payment transaction.
  • They generally are faster than drafts as the Payee normally receives payment within 24 - 72 hours of the telegraphic transfer being sent (in some cases it may take slightly longer).
  • They are an economical way of transferring a large amount of funds overseas.

Important notes:

You will need to provide some additional information when sending a telegraphic transfer to the following countries:

  • Europe: International Bank Account number (IBAN) – the IBAN incorporates the bank, sort code and account number
  • United Kingdom: IBAN or sort code
  • New Zealand: BSB
  • Malaysia: National ID number

The Telegraphic Transfer details must be clearly communicated and 100% accurate. Any errors may increase the time taken for your payee to receive funds.

To request a Telegraphic Transfer you will need to provide your residential address and a residential address for the receiver of the transfer, as well as details of the account that the funds will be transferred to.

The exchange rate for your Telegraphic Transfer will be determined at the time of the transfer.

International Cheques / Drafts

If you are looking for a cost effective way to send money overseas, then consider sending your funds via a draft.

If you have no time constraints, are happy using the mail and you don’t need the funds to be paid directly into an account, then a Draft would be suitable.

Note: Before acquiring a Foreign Draft, you should refer to Travelex’s Drafts Product Disclosure Statement and the accompanying Financial Services Guide.

How do they work?

A draft is like a bank cheque made out in a foreign currency.

It’s a very easy and affordable way for you to make payments or settle a transaction overseas. Drafts can be sent overseas via the mail and are available in a wide range of currencies.

The exchange rate that will apply to the purchase of a foreign currency draft varies from day to day and will be determined at the time of order.

Why are Drafts so popular for overseas payments?

  • Drafts may be enclosed with letters or invoices and forwarded direct to the Payee.
  • If a draft is lost or stolen the draft can usually be stopped and a new draft issued.
  • However, it is important to note that a draft can only be stopped once it has been confirmed that the draft has not already been presented for payment. If a draft has been presented for payment it is not possible for it to be stopped. A Draft is an economical method of transferring funds to a specific company or person overseas.
  • A Draft provides security of payment as it is a non-negotiable instrument and can only be credited to the Payee’s bank account unless the Payee has endorsed the draft.

Purchases

The foreign currency conversion rate is at the absolute discretion of the learing bank or agency, and will vary at any time according to the prevailing exchange rate. The conversion rate will be that rate which applies at the time of processing by the clearing bank or agency, not necessarily the date the Credit Union first receives the deposit.

Document Purchases

If you have a foreign document i.e. an overseas pension cheque, a foreign draft, travellers cheques left over from your holiday, or a foreign cheque you have received for goods or services, we can assist.

This is a very handy service if you are a regular traveller dealing in foreign cheques or your salary is paid by cheque from a foreign bank. If you would like to know more about this service, talk to us today.

Proceeds from instruments in foreign currency (international drafts and cheques etc) are not available until cleared by the Credit Union - usually within 45 days.

Cash & Travellers Cheques Repurchase:

Travelex can repurchase cash and Travellers Cheques from you, once you have returned from your overseas holiday. We offer a fast and efficient service and the funds are credited to your account overnight. We accept a large range of currencies for repurchase and our customer service team are always on hand to assist.

Encashment

Our Traveller’s Cheques are accepted at thousands of locations worldwide, including banks and bureaux de change. In some countries, in particular in the US, they can be used to pay directly for goods and services.

When you go to encash your Traveller’s Cheques, remember to take your passport or similar identification with you. You may also need to show your copy of the Sales Advice/Purchase Agreement Form as proof of purchase.

It is important that you make a note of the numbers on the Traveller’s Cheques as you encash them. Keep this record separate from your remaining cheques.

You should only complete the date on each cheque when you use it, just as if you were writing a personal cheque.

Safe & Secure

Traveller’s Cheques are more secure than cash and are a convenient way to carry money overseas. They are easy to carry, are refundable and are excellent for budgeting purposes. They are the perfect complement to local currency and Cash Passport cards.

And remember, if you have any unused Traveller’s Cheques, you can keep them for your next trip - they have no expiration date.

In the case of an emergency please contact the American Express toll free numbers listed below. In some cases a local charge may apply. If you cannot find a toll free number for the country you are in, please call collect to American Express USA on:

Hints & Tips

  • You must sign each Traveller’s Cheque as soon as you receive it, in the space marked Signature of Holder / Purchaser's Signature. This must be in your usual signature in non-erasable ink. You should only sign the cheque again in the presence of the accepting agent, when you encash it.
  • Please read and understand the Purchase, Claim and Refund conditions. You can find them inside the cover of the wallet provided with your Traveller’s Cheques. Failure to comply with these conditions could result in Travelex's refusal to honour refund requests.
  • Keep your copy of the Sales Advice / Purchase Agreement Form in a safe place and separate from your Traveller’s Cheques. You may be asked to provide it when encashing your cheques or if you require refund assistance.
  • Remember to safeguard your Traveller’s Cheques as you would your cash. If you are travelling by aeroplane, do not place your Traveller’s Cheques in the luggage you check-in, you should always carry them with you. When you arrive at your destination, please use a safety deposit box, if one is available.
